Check-in corner

Lantern Corner, when the street lights up indoors

Lanterns of every color hang in clusters, casting a soft glow on the walls and on your face. Inspired by Hoi An's old town, this photo corner looks its best after 6 PM.

The idea

Colorful light, a touch of Hoi An

Lantern Corner is where Nhà An keeps its most colorful photos: red, gold, pink and blue lanterns hung in clusters, pouring warm light onto the wall and into your frame. The corner starts to photograph beautifully after 6 PM, as dusk settles in.

Lantern Corner is planned for every branch, with the most lanterns and the strongest atmosphere at Nhà An Hoi An, the yellow house in the old town. Lanterns are an everyday sight in Hoi An's old quarter, and Nhà An wants to bring a little of that mood to you, even if you are in Saigon.

Shooting at this corner is free for Nhà An guests. The exact spot at each branch will be announced when we open.

  • Lanterns in every color, the most at the Hoi An branch
  • Loveliest after 6 PM, great for portraits, couples and groups of friends
  • Pairs well with áo dài and solid-color outfits

Quick tips

Best time, camera angle, outfit and props

Lantern light is lovely but soft. A few small tricks will keep your photos bright and sharp.

Best times

From 6 PM, just after sunset, the lantern colors pop while the sky is not yet fully dark, so your photos keep their depth. Later at night this corner is usually quieter, which makes it easier to pick your spot.

Camera angle

Stand off to one side and let the cluster of lanterns sit in a corner of the frame. Shoot slightly upward to show the layers of lanterns stacked together, or at eye level for a more intimate feel.

Outfit

Áo dài, or tops in cream, white or light blue, make the multicolored light stand out. If your outfit is heavily patterned, choose a simpler part of the lantern backdrop.

Props

A nón lá (conical hat), a paper fan or a glass of tea in hand all work well. Renting an áo dài at Nhà An's studio will give you a set of photos that matches this corner.

How to shoot

Four steps lantern photos on your phone

The light is already lovely. You only need to adjust it a little.

  1. Pick the right distance

Stand about an arm's length from the lanterns, so the light falls on your face and the cluster still fits in the frame without blowing out.

  2. Steady hands, flash off

Flash dulls the lanterns and flattens faces. Hold the phone with both hands, tuck your elbows in, and use night mode if your phone has it.

  3. Focus and adjust brightness

Tap on the face or main subject, then drag the brightness slider down a little so the lantern colors do not wash out.

  4. Shoot a burst

Take several shots in different poses, in both portrait and landscape, then keep the sharpest one.

Etiquette

Admire the lanterns, keep them intact

Lanterns are usually made of a bamboo frame wrapped in thin fabric, so they break easily if pulled or touched roughly.

Please do

  • Be gentle and avoid touching the lanterns, especially without asking staff first
  • Keep your shoot to a few minutes and make room for the next group
  • Keep your voice down, especially near the Deadline Room

Please avoid

  • Pulling, yanking or swinging on the lanterns and hanging cords
  • Using flash or an LED light pointed at other people
  • Blocking walkways or moving tables and chairs
