September: early autumn, new cốm and the Mid-Autumn full moon

Hanoi's sun softens, green cốm (young rice flakes) arrives wrapped in lotus leaves, classes start up again and star lanterns begin to glow on the streets. September is the month of National Day, school opening and the Mid-Autumn Festival.

Weather across Vietnam

Change of season, sun and rain in turns

September is when the whole country shifts gears: the North welcomes its first days of autumn, the South is still in the rainy season, and Central Vietnam slowly enters storm season. The weather changes quickly, so a light jacket and a folding umbrella are a smart pair to carry.

  • North: still hot early in the month, milder toward the end; showers and storms are still possible
  • Central: sunshine mixed with showers, with storms picking up from around September; check the forecast before traveling
  • Central Highlands: rainy season and cool weather, with most rain in the late afternoon and evening
  • South: rainy season, short afternoon showers, mornings still sunny and muggy

New cốm (young green rice flakes)

Hanoi's cốm, most famously from Vòng village, is tied to the first days of autumn. Enjoy it plain, with ripe bananas, or as a cake filling.

Pomelo

Pomelos peak around Mid-Autumn and often sit on the tray for moon-gazing. A heavy fruit with taut skin and a light fragrance is an easy sign of a good one.

Cao Bang

Trung Khanh chestnuts

Chestnut season usually runs from about September to October, and some years stretches into early November. Nutty and sweet, they're great roasted or boiled.

  • For pomelos, choose a heavy fruit with taut skin and a light fragrance near the stem
  • Wash chestnuts well and cook them thoroughly before eating

September outings

  • Bring a light jacket for early mornings and evenings
  • Visit the Northwest terraces on a dry, sunny day and check the roads before setting out
  • If you head to the Mid-Autumn streets with little ones, hold their hands tight in the crowd
