August: ripe longan, fragrant custard apples and Vu Lan season

The soft ngâu rains of the seventh lunar month roll in, longan hits its peak and Chi Lang custard apples turn sweet and fragrant. August is also when families gather for Vu Lan, the festival of filial piety held on the full moon of that month, students get ready for a new school year, and the Sept 2 holiday is just around the corner.

Weather across Vietnam

Late summer: heavy rain and softening sun

August is still summer, but Lập Thu (the Start of Autumn solar term), around Aug 7–8, signals that autumn is on its way. The seventh lunar month often brings steady drizzle, which Vietnamese people call mưa ngâu (ngâu rain).

  • North: hot and humid with lots of rain, possible downpours and storms; on dry days the sun feels softer
  • Central: still hot and sunny, and the beaches of Da Nang and Hoi An are as lovely as ever; keep an eye on the forecast as storm season approaches
  • Central Highlands: rainy season, cool weather, rain usually in the late afternoon and evening
  • South: rainy season, short afternoon showers, mornings still muggy

Little tips

Pick great fruit, stay strong on rainy days

Choosing and storing produce

  • Custard apples: pick fruit with slightly open eyes and a pale yellow tinge; let them soften for a few days, then move them to the fridge
  • Longan: choose firm clusters with brown-yellow, uncracked skin; eat within a few days
  • Rainy-day greens spoil easily; wash them well and let them drain before storing

Staying strong on hot, rainy days

  • Drink plenty of water and favor less-sweet drinks
  • Carry a raincoat and a pair of dry socks in case you get soaked
  • In the evening, choose a lighter-tea drink if you're sensitive to caffeine

Vu Lan and trips away

  • When visiting a pagoda or place of worship, dress modestly and keep quiet
  • Book early if you're hosting a family gathering the weekend before the full moon
  • Check storm and rain forecasts before traveling far
