July: early longans, midsummer sun and thunderstorms

Schools are out and everyone's itching to travel. In the North, longan season is just starting; in the South, durian and mangosteen are still plentiful; and a cold glass of tea is welcome on any hot day.

Weather across Vietnam

Midsummer: scorching sun, then a downpour

July is the heart of summer: the sun comes up early, and rain arrives fast and leaves just as fast. Wherever you go, bring a folding umbrella and your own water bottle.

  • North: hot and humid, with thunderstorms and heavy rain alternating; this is also typhoon season
  • Central: mostly hot and sunny, with some dry, scorching days; the beaches in Da Nang and Hoi An are lovely, best early in the morning or late in the afternoon
  • Central Highlands: rainy season and cool weather, with rain usually arriving in the late afternoon and evening
  • South: rainy season; sunny and muggy mornings, with short but heavy afternoon showers

Little tips

Pick great fruit, keep your energy up in the heat

Choosing and storing produce

  • Longans: pick bunches with golden-brown skin and firm fruit, with no cracks or leaking juice; they spoil easily, so keep them cool
  • Durian, mangosteen: buy just enough to finish within a few days, and favor sellers who are clear about the source
  • Summer greens wilt fast, so eat them soon and wash them well before cooking

Keeping your energy up in the heat

  • Drink plenty of water and limit very sweet drinks
  • Avoid the harsh midday sun; wear a hat and breathable clothes
  • In the evening, choose a lighter, less sweet cup of tea if you're sensitive to caffeine

Getting out in July

  • Go to the beach or see the lotus at dawn to beat the sun
  • Bring a raincoat and a waterproof pouch for your phone
  • Watch the weather forecast on long trips, since this is storm season
